YOUNG AND OLD

The two of them watched.
And as they watched,
The column drew near.
At last they could see
A long file of men.
The Young said, "Who are these men,
And where do they go?"
The Old answered,
"They are soldiers,
And they go to war."
The Young then asked,
"But what is war?"
The Old replied.

"War is where men
Fight and die."
To this the Young asked,
"Why?"
"Because they must."
Said the Old man with haste.
"Must fight?"
Asked the Young,
"Or must die?"
